foodgawker iPhone App

iPhone App Latest Screen

We are pleased to announce the release of our first iPhone app. The app is the mobile companion to foodgawker and has the following features…

- VISUALLY BROWSE food photos by latest submissions, popular posts (most clicked/most favorited), category or your marked favorites.

- DISCOVER recipes, restaurant reviews and new trends from thousands of food bloggers.

- SEARCH food and drink recipes by keyword and see a photo of the finished product.

- SAVE photos to your personal favorites screen.

- SYNC favorites between the mobile app and foodgawker.com.

- SHARE your favorite photos with friends via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, Tumblr and more.

The app isn’t intended to replace foodgawker.com, but it should allow you to get your food photo fix while you are on the go.

Upcoming Features

We weren’t able to get all the features we wanted into version 1.0 of the app, so here are a few things we plan on adding to future releases…

  • Shake to randomize (displays random thumbnails when the phone is shaken)
  • Endless scrolling instead of “load more photos…” link
  • Release to refresh/Pull down to update instead of the refresh button
  • Add ability to take notes and add tags to favorited posts and sync with site

Support/Feedback

If you have any issues with the app or would like to give us feedback, please let us know via our online support community at Get Satisfaction.

To all Android phone users, an Android app is on our to do list and we will address your needs soon.

Spread the Word

It took us over a year to design and develop the app. It shouldn’t have taken this long, but that’s another story for another day. Even with the work effort required to build the app and the additional server costs, we have decided to give away the app for FREE.

As you all know nothing is truly free these days. All we ask in return is for you to tell a friend and introduce the uninitiated to the joys of gawking at fabulous food photos. Also, if you like the app, please rate it/submit a review in the App Store.

Special Thanks

We first want to thank all the incredible food bloggers who submit to the site! Without you, foodgawker doesn’t exist. We hope the app brings you even more traffic to your blogs.

We would also like to give a shout out to our visual designer and one of our gawkerverse editors, Maria Hilas, for all the great graphics she produced for the app and sites. Last, but not least, we would like to send a big THANK YOU to our app and site lead developer, Edward Dale, for the fantastic work he’s given us over the years!

75K Milestone

We launched foodgawker on June 14, 2008 after slapping together a site in 2 days. Fast forward 826 days later and we just published our 75,000th post! We have posted 7 days a week, 365 days a year, which means all holidays. On average, we published 90.8 submissions per day and reviewed more than 165,000 submissions!

We’ve come a long way since launch day and we’re proud of the sites we’ve built. We have a lot more new features planned and are excited about the future. Most importantly, we really want to thank our loyal fans and amazing submitters! You all rock!

As you can see, we have a lot of work to do to get the other sites on the foodgawker level, but we are up for the challenge!

We created some foodgawker badges to show off your galleries to your blog readers. Regarding the other sites, we are still designing the badges, but they should be available soon.
