iPhone App Update v1.1

iPhone App Update v1.1

We just released iPhone app version 1.1 for all four apps to the App Store. This update adds the following…

  • Shake device to randomize (also on the “more” screen)
  • Double-tap to add to favorites (on single photo screen)
  • Pull/release to update any thumbnail screen
  • Links to other gawkerverse apps on the “more” screen
  • Login/logout on the “more” screen
  • Minor UI enhancements

We’ve heard your requests for the ability to go back to a specific photo where you left off browsing. Unfortunately, the framework we are using would still require us to load all images prior to the one you want, which is very data intensive. The apps are designed to give you access to the latest photos on-the-go and not meant to replace the websites, where you can navigate to a specific page. We hope the randomize feature allows you to explore the older images.

craftgawker users

Shake to randomize on the craftgawker app and randomize on the site may pull up old Etsy listings. We plan on removing the old commerce listings from the site shortly (here’s the reason why we stopped accepting Etsy/commerce listings), but we wanted to give you advanced notice about removing these posts. If you have any favorited photos that goes to Etsy/commerce sites older than #14767, they will be no longer available once we remove these commerce listings. We recommend you save them to your browser bookmarks, delicious or Pinterest. We plan on removing these old commerce listing posts on Wednesday, September 14th at 12:00 pm Pacific time.

Finally, yes, we will be developing iPad apps! Regarding an Android app, it will come one day, but we will be focusing on iPad development next. Thanks for all your support and for sharing the sites/apps with your friends!

It took us over a year to design and develop the app. It shouldn’t have taken this long, but that’s another story for another day. Even with the work effort required to build the app and the additional server costs, we have decided to give away the app for FREE.

As you all know nothing is truly free these days. All we ask in return is for you to tell a friend and introduce the uninitiated to the joys of gawking at fabulous food photos. Also, if you like the app, please rate it/submit a review in the App Store.

Special Thanks

We first want to thank all the incredible food bloggers who submit to the site! Without you, foodgawker doesn’t exist. We hope the app brings you even more traffic to your blogs.

We would also like to give a shout out to our visual designer and one of our gawkerverse editors, Maria Hilas, for all the great graphics she produced for the app and sites. Last, but not least, we would like to send a big THANK YOU to our app and site lead developer, Edward Dale, for the fantastic work he’s given us over the years!

iPhone App Sneak Peek

~

We’ve been talking about and working on an iPhone app for almost a year. It shouldn’t have taken this long and some of you may have had doubts about it ever launching. But it’s finally almost done, so we wanted to give you a sneak peek of the app.

It’s a simple UI that will allow you to get your foodgawker fix on the go. We hope to wrap up beta testing and bug fixes within a week and get it submitted to the app store. The foodgawker app is first and then will be followed by apps for weddinggawker, dwellinggawker and craftgawker.

We are excited about releasing these apps and hope to do it soon!
